organizer for Winnipeg events needed

For a little over two years, I have been the volunteer organizer for events for the local Ethiopian adoptive community in Winnipeg. For personal reasons I won’t be able to continue in this role, and it’s probably time to hand it off to someone with fresh ideas & enthusiasm anyway.

Interested in getting involved? It’s not hard! The Ethiopian Canadian Kids website is going to remain mine and change focus somewhat to appeal to a more general audience, so there are no web-related duties. I will still  publicize on the site any events that are planned for the local community (whether by adoptive parents or by local Ethiopian associations.)  The event organizer will be the one to come up with ideas for events, plan them, and get the word out to families (via word of mouth, message boards and websites, and adoption agencies if you wish.)

Please email me at EthioCdnKids@gmail.com if you have any questions or would like to take on this role.

Thanks,

June Adamson

Assiniboine Park picnic – Saturday June 23

The rained-out picnic from last weekend has been rescheduled for this Saturday, June 23, beginning at 2:00 pm. Once again – it’s a potluck picnic, and don’t forget your chairs or picnic blankets! We will be meeting up in the large field just to the east of the duck pond.

Also just a reminder that the Ethiopian Society’s day at St Malo Park is this Sunday, June 24! The forecast is looking great to enjoy a day at the beach. See this post for more details.

CANCELLED – Assiniboine Park picnic

Unfortunately due to the rain last night and today, the picnic in Assiniboine Park is being cancelled. A new date will be set and I will share that as soon as we have it. Sorry everyone!

St Malo Park gathering

The Ethiopian Society of Winnipeg invites you to join them for a get-together at St Malo Park on June 24. The cost is $25 per family (or $15 for an individual) and that will cover all your food & drink as well as games & more! The fun will get underway starting at 11 am.   You can register at Kokeb restaurant, Selam grocery, by calling 415-4472 or 956-4034, or by emailing info@ethiowpg.org .

And just a reminder, our potluck picnic at Assiniboine Park  is this Saturday, June 16. See this post for all the details! Hope to see you there!

Summer Picnic – June 16

Please join us for a summer potluck picnic at Assiniboine Park on Saturday, June 16 from noon to 3 pm. This will be a fun afternoon with games for the kids (soccer, races, tag, etc) as well as time to enjoy the great nature playground. It will be a true picnic – so bring your picnic blanket or chairs! We will have a table or two set up for food and are asking each family to bring a contribution to the potluck (eg a salad, or veggies, or some sandwiches,  or fruit… you decide!)  Paper plates, napkins, and lemonade will be provided.

We’ll be picnicking in the large field just to the east of the duck pond, for convenient access to the playground and the washrooms. See the park map here for details. Parking lots are shown on the map – note that the east gate zoo lot should have lots of room since that entrance to the zoo is closed now. Families coming from the north may find it easier to park on Portage or a nearby side street and just walk across the footbridge.

Hope to see lots of families there!

Dance Class windup

The students of the Ethio-Canadian Dancers Group will be celebrating their accomplishments for the year and showing off their best moves at a performance on Saturday, June 2. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer them on, and join in the fun! There will be activities for kids such as face painting, and refreshments will be served. The performance will start at 1:30 pm at Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton St. Hope to see you there!

New session of cooking classes

The Ethio-Canadian Dancers Group will be offering another session of cooking classes beginning Saturday, April 21. As a participant in the first session, I highly recommend these classes. It was great to learn some new dishes as well as some of the cultural traditions around food preparation. I even got the courage to finally attempt injera! Here are the details:

Our cooking classes will be  focused on different recipe of Ethiopian Cuisine. We invite you to join us in Ethiopian cooking using traditional methods prepared with homemade blends of different spices. All the dishes at these cooking classes will be served with “injera,” flat bread made of “Teff”, a fine grain unique to Ethiopia. We were very proud of our first cooking classes, it was a great success and we had great students to share the experience with.

To register please email  your full name and phone number to ethio.canadian@yahoo.ca. We would like to know ahead of time the number of participants to organize the groups.

Start Date: Classes will start on April, 21, 2012

Time: 1:30pm- 3:00 pm

Location: Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton St

Duration: 4 weeks long

Cooking Lab fee: $45.00

For more information, visit their new website!

Note that the group’s dance classes are still ongoing, and are held upstairs Knox United on Saturdays at 1:00 pm. Classes are free and new participants are always welcome.

Upcoming attachment-based parenting course

Making Sense of Discipline
with Pamela Whyte of the Neufeld Institute

This course applies the attachment-based developmental approach to the arena of discipline. Imposing order on children’s behaviour is never particularly easy; imposing order on their minds is even more daunting. When the challenge is to impose order without putting in jeopardy healthy attachment and development, many are at a loss as to how to proceed. Unfortunately, today’s prevailing methods of discipline are completely uninformed regarding their impact on attachment and development. This course not only provides parents and teachers with this knowledge but also equips them with a solid methodology that is not only much more effective but also much less risky than the usual fare.

Making Sense of Discipline not only answers the question of what to do when problems arise but how to do so without sacrificing a child’s emotional health and sense of security for short-term gains in behaviour and performance. The ultimate objective of this course is for parents and teachers to come to the place where the answers will come from their own understanding and they possess the inner confidence to handle the small stuff as well as the more challenging issues.

At the Winnipeg Centre Vineyard, 782 MAIN ST
Date: March 17 9am – 4:30pm
$80 for single
$110 for couple
Lunch and snacks provided
